Borderlands 4 Breaks Franchise Sales Records in Its First Month in the U.S.

Huge milestone for Borderlands 4

Borderlands 4 made a strong impression in the US, surpassing its predecessor Borderlands 3's revenue in its launch month. Gearbox's looter shooter was the top-selling premium video game in September and debuted as the third best-selling game of 2025 so far, according to US video game analytics company Circana. It topped the charts on both the Xbox and PC aggregate showcases.

For publisher 2K Games, the launch marks a new milestone. Borderlands 4 generated the highest first-month revenue in franchise history, nearly 30 percent higher than Borderlands 3. This achievement is due to revenue rather than sales, as the game launched with a Standard Edition priced at $69.99, a Deluxe Edition priced at $99.99, and a Super Deluxe Edition priced at $69.99. $129.99. By comparison, Borderlands 3 released in September 2019 for $59.99 for the Standard Edition, $79.99 for the Deluxe Edition, and $99.99 for the Super Deluxe Edition. Additionally, it was a six-month Epic Games Store exclusive on PC, and Borderlands 4 launched on Steam and consoles, expanding its potential audience.

While 2K Games hasn't released official sales figures, Circana reports that Borderlands 4 is the first game in the series to debut as the top-selling game during its release month. The game also set the franchise record for peak concurrent players on Steam, although performance issues resulted in a mixed review on the platform. Gearbox has released several patches since launch and plans to release the Borderlands 4 Day 30 update later this week to address existing issues.

In broader industry news, NBA 2K26 is leading sales in 2025 so far, ahead of Capcom's sales. Monster Hunter: Wild Lands. Helldivers 2 also made a strong debut, finishing fourth on Xbox in September and sixth overall, maintaining 19th place in year-to-date sales.
