Warner Bros. Discovery is making good on its promise to raise subscription fees for HBO Maxannouncing a sudden price increase that will take effect immediately for new subscribers.
According to Diversity, HBO Max price starting today (October 21) will increase by as much as $2 per month and $20 per year. Costs for each plan, including both monthly and annual, have increased, making the service one of the most expensive ad-free streaming plans compared to its competitors—only Hulu costs more at $18.99 per month.

HBO Max users are understandably disappointed by the news, with many expressing their displeasure on social media. One Reddit thread already has more than 500 comments filled with users threatening to close their accounts to boycott the growth.
Reactions like these are becoming increasingly common, especially in 2025, as HBO Max isn't the only platform to raise prices. Many of best streaming services announced a similar increase this year, a worrying trend for consumers who are already tired of subscriptions.
How to avoid price hikes on HBO Max
If you're already an HBO Max user, you won't see the price increase until your next billing date, whether it's November 20th or later. Meanwhile, anyone who signed up for an annual plan won't have to pay higher prices until their next renewal.
This means there's still time to find a way to avoid paying more to watch your favorite movies and shows online, since existing subscribers must be notified of any account changes 30 days before the increase begins.
