Stephen A. Smith is still thinking about LeBron James The confrontation was on the court, and he told one former NBA star why he felt like he was “set up” by the league's all-time scoring leader in that moment.
Smith and James went viral earlier this year during Los Angeles Lakers A game in which the latter confronted the former in his courtside seat to seemingly respond to Smith's criticism of the Lakers' treatment of Bronny James, the superstar's son.
In March, Smith said the incident stemmed from his television criticism of Bronny.

“It wasn’t a basketball player confronting me. It was the parent. It was the father,” Smith said. on ESPN at that time. “I can’t sit here and be angry or feel wronged by LeBron James for that matter. By all accounts, he's obviously a wonderful family man and father who cares very, very deeply for his son.”
During a recent episode of 7pm in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony, Smith revisited the moment with New York Knicks legend says that the circumstances of the conversation with James, as well as the way he appeared on camera, still do not suit him.

“The day he attacked me on the court, that was the day my contract was announced and that I was staying with ESPN,” Smith explained on the podcast. “Go back and look at the camera angle… It's 2025, we have technology everywhere. TNT is a nationally televised game. How come we have one angle and the only angle you see is him and his face, but you see my nutty head?”
Smith believes that given James' star status, there would have been many more courtside angles at the meeting.
“It’s impossible for you to be in the arena, you’re LeBron James, and the only angle anyone gets is a straight shot where you get in my face,” Smith added. “They don't see any reaction. They don't see anything. And this is an accident?

Here, Smith delved into the realm of conspiracy, but he stood his ground, expressing his opinion that this had the potential to be an orchestrated confrontation.
“I was damn right,” Smith quickly responded when asked whether he felt set up or not. “That's how I feel. But it’s okay, no problem, because the next day I go on air and say: “This is a dad reacting to his son.”
And in case you were wondering, no, Smith and James have not reconciled. In fact, Smith said directly what he thought of James.

“I don’t like his ass one bit,” he said. “This happened more than ten years ago. I won't go into detail about what this man tried to do to me. You don't understand what this man went through… If it was up to him, I wouldn't be where I am today. These are some low, low things.”
There are differences between the two and they don't look like they can be patched up for the 2025-26 season this week.
