The Oscar-nominated actor will voice the Cowardly Lion in Wicked: For Good. The announcement was made on Monday at short clip posted on the film's and Domingo's Instagram accounts, showing the Emmy winner hiding behind an adorable stuffed lion before the screening.
In an interview published last week in Deadlinedirector of “Wicked: For Good” Jobs for men hid the identity of the person he chose to play the role in second installment his musical adaptation.
“Dude, wait until the actor who gave us the voice of the Cowardly Lion comes out on the red carpet,” he said to tease the then-secret casting. “It's going to be wild.”
However, he revealed that he approached the “famous actor” – who we now know is Domingo – through his private messages.
“I was like, 'It's not that many lines, but maybe you have some time.' I know you're busy. I'll come see you,” Chu said of their conversation on Instagram. “He was like, 'What the hell, no, let's go!' And then we went ahead and recorded the lines.”
The Cowardly Lion, famous as one of Dorothy's traveling companions in L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its various adaptations, is introduced in “Wicked“as a young caged cub who is brought to Shiz by a new professor after the school bans all animals from attending classes. An enraged Elphaba helps the lion cub escape. In Wicked: For Good, which takes place years after the events of the first film, this lion cub will become an adult.
“Wicked: For Good” stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande return as Elphaba Tropp and Glinda Upland, respectively, during their time as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. I'm also returning fromWickedThey are Jonathan Bailey (Fiyero), Jeff Goldblum (The Wizard), Michelle Yeoh (Madame Morrible), Ethan Slater (Bock) and Marissa Bode (Nessarose).
The film will hit theaters on November 21st.
