As everyone expected, Sabrina Carpenter was pretty cool on double duty Saturday Night Livehost and performer on the show this past weekend (October 18). However, pop girl Rina Sawayama disagreed with the costumes and scenery for Carpenter's play “Nobody's Son” ( Man's best friend track with this viral whip sound), questioning the cultural sensitivity of the art movement.
“Big love to Sabrina,” Sawayama wrote on her Instagram Story yesterday (October 19) above a clip from the martial arts-themed performance, which featured Carpenter wearing a sparkling white gi-like robe as a dress while background dancers acted out a fight scene behind her on a dojo-inspired set. “but creative collectives of fellow artists… if we are explicitly referencing culture, please could you do so with the research, respect and care it deserves.”
“Shoes on the tatami are a prison,” the Japanese-British musician added of the soft mats used as floors in traditional Japanese-style rooms, focusing attention on the sneaker-clad feet of the dancers. (It is traditionally expected to remove your shoes or even slippers before stepping onto the mat – preferably with clean white socks, while avoiding the edges of the mats.)
