Wheaties, Cougars rout Northstars – Brandon Sun

BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The second-ranked Wheat Kings (7-2-0-0) swept the 13th-ranked Norman Northstars (0-11-0-0) at J&G Homes Arena in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League over the weekend.

Reed Nichol had two goals and two assists as the Wheat Kings routed the visitors 15-2 on Friday.

Easten Turco also scored two goals, with Benjamin Sveistrup, Matthew Dupuis, Ethan Stanley, Crew Elder, Joe Balabanski, Hunter Ethelston, Teran Turner, Hudson Champagne, Cale Jones, Grady Taylor and Kevin Nee scoring in singles.

Uriah Musteil made 17 saves for Brandon, who dressed just 16 skaters, while Parker Clements and Westin Hlady blocked 42 of Norman's shots.

On Thursday, Nicol had five goals and two assists and Ethelston added a pair of goals as the Wheat Kings won 12-1. Dupuis, Ethan Stanley, Hudson Champagne, Easten Turko and Joe Balabanski added singles.

Cooper Dryden made nine saves for Brandon, while Parker Clements and Westin Hlady blocked 52 shots for Norman.

The Wheat Kings will visit the Seven Oaks Community Center to play the Winnipeg Thrashers on Saturday at 7:00 p.m., as well as Portage la Prairie's Stride Place Stadium to play the Central Plains Capitals on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.

SOUTHWESTERN PUMAS

The third-ranked Cougars (6-2-1-1) also had a chance to face Norman, which played four games in four days, with the final two games at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex.

On Sunday, Jake Beaty, Eric Berger and Spencer Cullen gave the visitors a 3-0 lead five minutes into the first period, and Cole Lobro scored midway through the frame for a 4-1 win. Brady Shields made 15 saves for Southwest and Westin Hlady blocked 31 shots for Norman.

On Saturday, Berger had a hat trick and Lobrough, Beaty and Coulton Coop added singles in a 6-2 win. Nate Brown made 21 saves for Southwest and Parker Clements blocked 31 shots for Norman.

The Cougars visit Stride Place to take on Central Plains on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and will play the Pembina Valley Hawks at Morden's Access Event Center on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

YELLOW HUNGRY LEADERS

The sixth-ranked Chiefs (5-4-0-0) faced the 12th-ranked Interlake Lightning (0-8-0-0) at Shoal Lake Community Stadium in a doubleheader over the weekend.

On Sunday, Isaac McArthur, Bryce Gambler, Wyatt Negovan, Carter White and Grady McNish fired as the Chiefs earned a 5-1 win. Sawyer Wallin made 33 saves for Yellowhead and Grayson McDonald blocked 35 shots for Interlake.

On Saturday, Destin Knight scored twice and Oliver Nickel, Carter White, Alec Strachan and McNish added singles in Southwestern's 6-4 win. Landon McGregor made 35 saves for Yellowhead and Seth Schaeffer blocked 19 shots for Interlake.

The Chiefs will travel to Thompson's CA Nesbitt Arena to face Norman on Saturday at 7pm and Sunday afternoon at 1.30pm.

PARKLAND RANGERS

The fifth-place Rangers (5-1-1-0) earned three points against the first-place Winnipeg Wild (7-0-0-1) and the ninth-place Eastman Selects (3-3-0-0).

Braden Budolowski, Noah Smigielski and Dayson Martin scored three goals Sunday at the Southeast Steinbach Events Center as the Rangers cruised to a 3-2 win over Eastman. Carter Sigurdson made 51 saves for Parkland and Carter Warren blocked 26 shots for Eastman.

On Saturday at Hockey for All Stadium, Jack Ross scored in overtime for a 3-2 victory. Landyn Garton and Dayson Martin scored for Parkland, which led twice in the game.

Carter Sigurdson made 33 saves for Parkland and Chase Kettles blocked 27 shots for Winnipeg.

The Rangers will host a triple header in Winnipeg over the weekend, facing the Bruins at the Southdale Community Center on Friday at 7:00 pm and Saturday at 5:30 pm and finishing at the Seven Oaks Civic Center against the Thrashers on Sunday at 12:30 pm.

GIRLS

YELLOW HUNGRY LEADERS

WESTMAN WILDCATS

The sixth-ranked Chiefs (2-2-0-1) and fourth-ranked Wildcats (3-4-0-2) met in a pair of close games in the Manitoba U18 AAA Women's Hockey League.

On Sunday at Hartney Arena, Chiefs forward Rose Cochrane scored the lone goal late in the second period and Gracie Johnston earned a shutout in Yellowhead's 1-0 win.

Indigo Stone allowed only one goal against Westman. Shots on goal were not immediately possible.

On Saturday at Shoal Lake Community Complex, Indigo Stone made 26 saves and Chloe Astle and Ivy Frye scored in Westman's 2-0 win. Kylie Hack made 25 saves for the Yellowheads.

In their only matchup next week, the Chiefs host the Winnipeg Ice on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Wildcats will host the Ice on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
