The authoritarian drift continues in the United States, and the Trump administration is making ongoing efforts to accelerate its pace.
Events are moving so quickly that we may wonder if we have enough time to turn things around.
Very narrow room for maneuver for “No Kings”
More than 2,700 demonstrations on Saturday drew seven million Americans to deplore the shutdown of government services, the actions of border police and the deployment of the National Guard in some major cities.
Even if I welcome this mobilization, I am more or less optimistic about the possible results.
For what reasons? The authoritarian turn has gone so far that the president is just waiting for an excuse to resort to even more help from the National Guard or the army.
Moreover, citizen mobilization matters if it can be accompanied by voting.
The next election date is November 2026.
Republicans have already begun remapping the electoral map in several states, using every trick they can to slow down voter registration or reduce minority voting.
Who today can risk predicting that the midterm elections will go well?
“I love Hitler»
I have always refrained from calling the Trump administration or Republicans fascists or Nazis. I don’t have to do this; the president’s supporters do it for me. This week, Politico website revealed messages exchanged on the Telegram platform by young Republicans across the United States.
The content was staggering, ranging from admiration for Hitler to mentions of gas chambers for his opponents, racist remarks against blacks and even glorification of rape.
The reported comments are heartbreaking and should be strongly condemned, regardless of who is reporting them.
Here these are Republican Party activists aged 18 to 40 who are already actively involved in mobilizing and organizing the activities of their party.
Some made it to the White House. This should send shivers down your spine.
While the Republicans, especially in New York, reacted quickly by driving out the undesirables, the Vice President of the United States was pleased that the young people were to blame.
How young are we in the United States? Mobilized “youth” from 18 to 40 years old making comments like this should shake up the President and Vice President.
Vance's excuse is convenient, avoiding answering a troubling question: Why are these young people attracted to and feel accepted by the Republican Party?
The situation has changed south of the border. At the top of the hierarchy, we tolerate the intolerable, calling peaceful demonstrations by concerned citizens un-American.
