House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Friday accused White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt of being “crazy” and “ignorant” after she criticized the Democratic Party's “core constituency.”
Democrats were angry at Leavitt for declaring On Thursday, she said the Democratic Party is made up of “Hamas terrorists, illegal immigrants and violent criminals” and criticized them for not allowing the government to shut down. Jeffries also told reporters that Leavitt was a “cold-blooded liar” and shifted blame for the shutdown to Republicans and the White House.
“And then there's Caroline Leavitt, who's sick. She's out of control,” Jeffries said. “And I'm not sure if she's just crazy or ignorant, a stone-cold liar or all of the above. But the idea that a White House official would say that the Democratic Party is made up of terrorists, violent criminals and illegal immigrants. It makes no sense because that's what the American people are getting from the Trump administration in the middle of a quarantine. Nearly all Democrats voted to shut down the government on Oct. 1 after Republicans attempted to pass a continuing resolution (CR) that did not include an extension of Biden-era subsidies in the Affordable Care Act. Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada and independent Sen. Angus King of Maine, who caucuses with Democrats, voted to keep the government open.
Democrats had previously voted for the same CR in past sessions. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who previously voted for the shutdown said in September 2024 that due to the economic shutdown, the average American “will suffer the most,” including those on Social Security.
President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance said that Schumer voted to shut down the government because he is afraid New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will oppose him. Ocasio-Cortez and Vermont Independent Senator Bernie Sanders whipped CNN's Kaitlan Collins during a town hall Wednesday to ask whether Ocasio-Cortez is considering running for his seat.
