- A greener energy storage solution with faster charging and longer lifespan for everyday electronics
Italian startup Captery claims to have developed AA and AAA batteries that charge in less than three minutes and last for decades.
Currently seeking funding for KickstarterCaptery Ultra uses supercapacitor technology rather than traditional lithium or nickel metal hydride chemistry.
This design allows for virtually endless charge and discharge cycles without the wear and tear that limits standard batteries. The result, Captery says, is an energy source that can take about 500 times longer to charge than a conventional battery.
High stability
Supercapacitors store energy differently than conventional batteries, relying on physical rather than chemical processes. As a result, they recharge very quickly and degrade much less over time.
Its elements are built using materials that are said to be approximately 90% more environmentally friendly than those used in traditional options.
The firm notes that every year, billions of batteries end up in landfills, creating hundreds of thousands of tons of toxic waste.
Captery Ultra reaches 3.2V, providing enough power for most consumer electronics that are typically powered by two 1.5V batteries.
Users will have to charge them using a special S-Charge Plus device, as regular lithium or NiMH chargers can damage the cells. The charger fits AA and AAA models, and the adapter allows you to use smaller format models.
Batteries can be used in most devices that use two or more batteries, including remote controls, toys, and wireless keyboards.
With the Captery Bridge accessory, users can combine new elements with old ones to extend life and maintain power balance.
The company's crowdfunding campaign attracted early support, raising $8,407 of its $6,524 goal in 26 days.
Various levels of support are offered, with the standard Ultra Kit priced at €54 (approximately $63) with free worldwide shipping. These include S-Charger Plus, Captery AA Ultra 3V, Captery AAA Ultra 3V, Captery Bridge AA and Captery Bridge AAA, with additional add-ons available.
If enough money is raised, Captery plans to release a 1.5V version compatible with single-slot devices.
