Trump commutes George Santos’ prison sentence, says he will be released immediately


President Trump said Friday he has commuted the prison sentence of former New York Republican congressman George Santos for fraud.

In a post on Truth Social, the president said Santos was “treated horribly” in prison and that he would be released immediately.

Santos surrendered to a federal prison in New Jersey. July 25 begin serving more than seven years after he pleaded guilty to face charges of fraud and identity theft.

“George was in solitary confinement for a long time and by all accounts was treated horribly badly. That's why I just signed a commutation order, IMMEDIATELY releasing George Santos from prison. Good luck George, have a good life!” This is stated in the President's message.

The former Long Island congressman was being held at the Federal Bureau of Prisons at the Federal Correctional Institution in Fairton. He was sentenced in April to 87 months in prison. He was also ordered to pay $373,949.97 in fines and restitution.

Santos was elected to New York's 3rd Congressional District in 2022. The following year he was elected expelled from Congress after a House Ethics Committee report found “substantial evidence” he broke the law.

Santos was accused of exaggerating or lying about parts of his background shortly after taking office. He was charged with defrauding voters and donors in his district, which includes Nassau County and parts of Queens.
