Martin Saint-Louis says even though he's just starting his fourth year as Canadiens head coach, he's still learning to discover Montreal, a city he moved as far away from as possible when he was younger.

In a generous interview that aired Thursday on the show Hello HelloThe former player touched on several topics, including his youth. However, originally from Laval, he didn't have too much opportunity to experience Quebec's largest market before taking on one of the most senior jobs in the province, and he admitted his career hadn't brought him much to Montreal before.

Asked by host and journalist Eva-Marie Lortie about what he likes most about the Quebec metropolis, St. Louis made some revelations.

“Personally, I'm discovering Montreal. When I was little, my mother convinced me that the city was dangerous. I lived in Laval and she told me: 'Don't go to Montreal, it's dangerous!' I was 16-17 years old, the age when you can start meeting friends. So, I never went there because my mother instilled in me a fear of all cities,” he replied.

“I’m a suburban guy, cities scare me. […]but I'm starting to explore Montreal. I'm going to have dinner [au restaurant]I walk a lot and am never far from Rue Sainte-Catherine. And I realized that it’s not that dangerous,” he continued.

If that might assuage some skeptics, the coach now has his hometown firmly in his heart.

“Yes, I love Montreal,” he said, adding that he is regularly recognized in public places.
