Earlier this year, Robert Smith hinted that the band would release another new album. “hopefully until next summer” and it looks like this mythical record was actually recorded – and there's also a concert film in the works?
All this information is taken from the recently updated, incredibly comprehensive bio – The Cure have been around since 1976, so I assumed it was justified – written by Tim Brothers on the band's website and includes a particularly noteworthy closing paragraph about what the Cure have been up to over the last year or so. It says:
The Cure spent the spring of 2024 finishing 8 songs recorded back in 2019, with mixing and final mastering taking place in the summer. In September, news of a new studio album was announced, and on Friday, November 1 Songs of the Lost World was released, the event was marked by a three-hour performance at Troxy London, which was streamed free worldwide to over a million people. The album received universal acclaim from both fans and critics, reaching number one in more than 30 countries. In March 2025, the band returned to Rockfield Studios to record 13 more songs for the next album. Friday 13 June 24 track Lost World Mixes was released and featured remixes and reworks from 24 incredible artists including Four Tet, Mogwai, Paul Oakenfold, Chino Moreno and Orbital. In June, Robert performed with Olivia Rodrigo as a guest on several Cure songs during her Glastonbury headlining show, and then returned to the studio to help edit and remix. Lost World Show movie…
That's right: the album happened, and it was followed by a stellar one remix collection. Blink and you might miss the fact that the band apparently returned to Rockfield Studios in March of this year “to record 13 more songs for the next album.” Fast forward through Smith's performance with Olivia Rodrigo at Glastonbury and we arrive at the so-called Lost World Show idea for the film before the author falls ominously silent. Talk about a cliffhanger!
However, The Cure have already announced a number of headlining dates in the UK for next year, which will certainly prepare them for the release of another album. However, Smith also said that around Songs of the Lost World announce that the next album will be “almost finished” and who can say whether it’s this or something completely different.
