A woman died after she was shot by an RCMP officer who was in response to an assault call in East Passage, North Carolina, According to the province's independent police watchdog.
RCMP were called shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday to a home in the community about 15 kilometers southeast of downtown Halifax.
According to the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT), which investigates all serious police matters, officers arrived at the scene on Tuesday to find “an adult female… with a knife.”
“The woman did not comply with the officer's orders to drop the knife. The officers used a CEW/Taser weapon,” SiRT said in a statement.

SiRT reports that the preliminary investigation suggests the woman “continued to approach with a knife” and the officer fired his weapon.
“She was pronounced dead shortly thereafter,” SiRT reported.

SiRT, which is led by an independent civilian director, is now investigating the shooting. The director has the authority to determine whether charges should be filed after the investigation is completed.
The team is responsible for investigating all cases involving death, serious injury, sexual assault, intimate partner violence or other matters of public interest in which a police officer is involved.
