If you've been experiencing random crashes on your Pixel 10 smartphone, you're not alone. On the weekends several Reddit users complained that their Pixel 10 phones, which just launched in August, were already experiencing severe slowdowns and frequent crashes when trying to download apps. To make matters worse, the problem seemed to persist across all apps and phone models, leaving users unable to do much on their new devices.
“If the app opens and loads, it won't let me touch anything and crashes.” user cdriese said, and a number of others share a similar opinion.
The unpleasant news took me somewhat by surprise, because when watching Pixel 10 And Pixel 10 Pro at launch, I really liked both. But the problem seems to have appeared quite recently.
Several Reddit users pointed out Google Play Services, October 10. The culprit here is an update, with some saying that uninstalling the update fixed the problem for them. “My theory is that the October game services update somehow conflicts with the September Android OS update,” he said. user PuzzleHeadedSquidadding that they haven't had a single crash since the Play Services update was removed. Of course, when I booted my phone with the September Android OS update and the initial October game services updates, I started having problems as well.
In some ways, though, it's still a relief. Your new hardware isn't broken yet, but uninstalling the new Play Services update creates its own headaches. Luckily, another solution emerged this morning, and it's quite simple.
If you're experiencing app crashes on your Pixel 10, here's what you can do.
Official fix
Random Reddit users weren't the only ones experiencing this problem. Android Police founder Artem Rusakovsky also mentioned the issue in X's post on October 12, saying his Pixel 10 Pro XL was affected by it.
This tweet is currently unavailable. It may be downloading or has been deleted.
Luckily, as a member of the press, he had a few more resources at his disposal to correct this error than the average Redditor. Over the weekend, Russakovsky quickly contacted his contacts at Google, who he said put together multiple teams to resolve the issue and have since released a server-side fix.
What are your thoughts so far?
In theory, this means that a simple restart should get your phone back to normal, although if the problem persists you should also make sure you're running the latest build of Google Play Services (which you can check under Settings > Applications > Google Play Services > Application details.), then perform another restart.
This is a fairly quick fix and doesn't require much effort on your part, but if you've put your Pixel aside for the time being, it's worth downloading it again to see if you're still having problems.
Unofficial fix
However, it is quite possible that Google engineers still missed something. If you're still having trouble downloading apps, you can use the community method to uninstall the October Play Services update instead. However, this will log you out of your Google accounts and will not include Google's official fix, so I would only recommend this if absolutely necessary.
However, if you're about to tear your hair out, you might want to move on to Settings > Applications > Google Play Services > Application details. and click “Uninstall updates” to start the process. Just make sure you have your Google passwords (or access keys!) I remembered first.
However, first try clicking the Update button next to it instead and then rebooting your phone. This is what I did after initial testing without the morning update and my apps now run as fast as before.
