As Donald Trump approaches the end of his first 100 days in office, his administration continues to strike at many American institutions. Discussion participants joined Washington Week with The Atlantic last night to discuss the administration's stance on the courts, universities, government agencies, etc.
Meanwhile, Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski told voters this week that “we are all afraid,” adding that she is afraid to use her vote “because retaliation is real.”
“What she's talking about is so common,” Mark Leibovich said last night. She's not talking about “political intimidation, like Elon Musk throwing a ton of money at an opponent or someone in a primary.” He continued, “She's talking about physical fear.”
Murkowski's sentiments are also not isolated, Leibovich added. “It became a real hallmark of this era,” he said. “Government is supposed to be done through politics, persuasion, debate. Authoritarianism is done through intimidation, threats, and in some cases, violence.”
I join the editor-in-chief AtlanticJeffrey Goldberg to discuss this and more: Peter Baker, Chief White House Correspondent New York Times; Laura Barron-Lopez, White House Correspondent PBS News Hour; Eugene Daniels, senior Washington correspondent and future co-host Weekend on MSNBC; and Mark Leibovich, magazine staff writer Atlantic.
