LOS ANGELES (AP) — Barack Obama is entering the race for control of the U.S. House of Representatives, appearing in a 30-second ad urging California voters to approve a proposal on the November ballot that could add up to five Democratic candidates. Seats for home in California.
Proposition 50 would dramatically redraw California's congressional districts to add Democratic seats in Congress. It is designed to win Democratic control of the House and aims to offset President Donald Trump's actions in Texas and elsewhere to help Republicans win more seats in the 2026 midterm elections.
“Republicans want to steal enough seats in Congress to rig the next election and have unchecked power for two more years,” Obama says in the ad, looking straight into the camera. “You can stop Republicans in their tracks.”
Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom rigged the elections like a referendum on all issues Trumpwhich is unpopular in liberal-leaning California except among its conservative base. Voting on a proposal coming and ends on November 4th.
Republicans and other opponents say the proposal represents a Democratic power grab that would overturn district lines drawn by an independent commission created by voters more than a decade ago.
The duel between California and Texas, the country's two most populous states, has escalated. spread nationally. North Carolina Republican Legislative Leaders announced plans The state House of Representatives will vote on Monday next week to redraw maps of state House districts, taking up Trump's call to secure more GOP seats across the country and counter competing moves from Democrats.
Republicans hold a 219-213 majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, with three vacancies.
If a new political map is approved in California, perhaps it could slash five Republican-held House seats while supporting Democratic incumbents in other congressional districts. That could increase Democrats' lead to 48 of California's 52 congressional seats, up from the party's 43 currently held.
