Almost 20 years have passed since then Vinyl sales began to rise, leading to a resurgence in analogue production. And cassettes have also experienced a (slightly more niche) comeback. Now the retro format is aligned with the fact that Rhinoceros calls “a new era of audiophile listening”: the return of reel-to-reel tape.
Sublabel today High precision rhinoceros released two reel-to-reel tapes for the 1971 albums: T. rexthis is a classic game Electric Warrior And Yesprogressive breakthrough Album Yes.
These reel-to-reel reels probably won't replace vinyl anytime soon, as they cost US$299.98 ($419.68 CAD) each and are limited to 500 copies.
The press release notes that reel-to-reel “was once the gold standard for serious listeners,” bringing “the pleasure of a master tape into your home.” Each title was dubbed in real time from a 1:1 scale copy of the original master tape.
Here's some technical nonsense: “These 1/4″ half-track tape reels are manufactured to IEC standard on high quality RTM LPR90 tape and housed on 10.5″ spools, and are designed for exceptional durability when stored in a cool, clean place away from magnetic fields.” Cool, got it.
Rhino High Fidelity appears to be planning to continue its series of reel-to-reel releases. Check them out Here.
