A lot of the men in my life have facial hair, including my boyfriend and both of my brothers, so I got a front row seat to the neglect. They can barely run their face under the running water in the shower. They preen themselves for the sake of vanity, to make them presentable, but this is the bare minimum.

I wonder if they even remember that there is skin under the beard? I guess if they can't see it, then it doesn't exist for them. There's not much going on in the skin care department, and yet they'll still complain about razor burn, pimples, drynessor cereal like it's the end of the world. I need help solving this problem.

“When you have a beard, you have to make sure that the skin underneath is also taken care of,” said Julien Howard, a master barber from New York who passes by Bicycle hairdresser. According to him, regularly trimming your shaggy hair will also do wonders for maintaining your appearance.

Dr. Anthony Rossi, a dermatologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering New Yorkagreed that in addition to proper beard care, it is absolutely necessary to take care of your facial skin. According to him, there are three main stages of beard care:

  • Washing your face (every day!)
  • Moisturizing
  • Care

These steps will not only help clean your hair, but also the skin underneath, and keep your entire facial hair area healthy, even if you have a thick beard.

“Another note for men with beards: They should avoid stroking their beard with their hands (even though it can look cool),” Rossi told BuzzFeed News via email. “Their hands are full of bacteria and it transfers to the face and can cause infections and rashes.”

Clearly some of our bearded friends need help. They want to look cool and have amazing facial hair (nothing makes my boyfriend happier than a compliment on his mustache), but they need a push in the right direction. Do them a favor and send them this guide or give them some of these products to get started on thorough beard care.
