Jen Atkin on Motherhood, Beauty Fails, and Why Balance Is ‘BS’

How much time do you spend preparing?

More than usual. I started waking up very early to take the kids to school. I get up very early now. I spend an hour and fifteen or an hour and twenty between routine training and training camps. When I'm alone at work in Los Angeles, it's an hour and a half or an hour and forty-five. I give myself a little extra time.

What's your favorite way to take a moment for yourself?

To be honest, I have to say that I was actually in a meeting preparing for this trip and I put my Bellamy Tapesand the girls all fell silent and their jaws dropped to the ground. They were like, “You do Cher hair for us, it looks so easy,” and I was like, “You guys can do it yourself.” For me, this is the fastest way to cheer up. This is dry shampoo. I immediately get the feeling that you've got all your crap together.

Which women inspire you the most right now?

I would say Melinda French Gates, Kris Jenner and Kamala Harris.

If you could change one thing about the perception of beauty on social media, what would it be?

This is such a difficult question because I feel like there is good and bad. It can make us feel bad, but it can also help us feel inspired and feel really good. I would just say be careful with negativity and comparisons. And don't ask ChatGPT what you should do with your hair. ChatGPT doesn't know about hair trends.

You can only use three products for the rest of your life. What are they and why?

Hot round brush Mane because my hair will be done in about five minutes. My Bellami ribbon extensions have swept ends for instant glamour. Hair and body spray Ouai St. Barts– after all these years he is still my favorite.
