One of those key moments came on the first drive, when they drove 15 plays down the field, killing nearly 10 full minutes of first-quarter clock that climaxed on fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line. Of course, Dan Campbell's Lions team was going to do it so close to the goal line, but it had to be a little tricky.
Defender Jared Goff Initially under center, he moved to his left and was passed to him by running back David Montgomery. Goff initially fumbled, but was able to regain control and get into the end zone for an impressive touchdown. However, after discussion, officials determined that Goff was never installed and it was an illegal traffic flag. Instead, Jake Bates had to kick a field goal to go up 3–0.

Meanwhile, Patrick Mahomes was sure to return a touchdown, and he did so much faster than the Lions' opening drive. He found Xavier Worthy for his first touchdown of the season, although Harrison Butker missed the extra point, keeping the score 6–3.
The Lions were able to find the end zone on the ensuing drive as Jameson Williams, who has been quiet in recent weeks despite the winning streak, fought off several Chiefs tackles on a 22-yard interception for six scores.
Detroit was able to force the Chiefs to turn the ball over on downs, giving them an opportunity to really take the lead on the road. But Goff's fourth-and-2 passes from the Kansas City 44-yard line were not safe in the hands of Amon-Ra St. Brown, despite their strong connection. The tide quickly turned in the Chiefs' favor, and Mahomes used it all to take the lead.
This time, Mahomes rushed for his fourth touchdown of the season, leaving it there and scoring with 37 seconds left.
With the Chiefs getting the ball early in the second half, Campbell's team had a hard time swallowing the touchdown, and Detroit found itself in an even bigger hole as the third quarter began.
Mahomes was methodical when play resumed, and for the first of his two second-half touchdowns, he found Hollywood Brown for a 20-10 lead. The Lions were able to cut the lead to three entering the fourth quarter when tight end Sam LaPorta made a stunning one-handed catch for six points.
But once it appeared the Lions were at it again, Mahomes paid for the defense. It was Brown again, who found himself wide open on third-and-short near the goal line.
After Butker kicked a field goal to make it 30-17, it took a miracle for the Lions to come back from that deficit with 2:26 left. But they failed to connect again on fourth-and-short, ending their hopes.

On the sidelines, Mahomes had a strong performance: 257 yards and three touchdowns on 22-of-30 through the air and rushed for 31 yards on 10 carries. Tight end Travis Kelce led the way with six catches for 78 yards, with his fiancée Taylor Swift in attendance tonight at his first NFL game of the season.
Meanwhile, for the Lions, Goff was 23 of 29 for 203 yards with two touchdown passes. St. Brown had nine catches but only went for 45 yards. The Chiefs defense also did a good job of slowing down the running game of Jameer Gibbs (17 carries, 65 yards) and David Montgomery (four carries, 24 yards).
