Bengals kicker McPherson hits 67-yard field goal but timeout nullifies it

Cincinnati Bengals Kicker Evan McPherson nearly rewrote the NFL record book on Sunday when he lined up for a 67-yard field goal to end the first half against the Green Bay Packers.

McPherson's shot hit the goal post crossbar and went through the posts. Unfortunately, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur called timeout before the shot was taken and it didn't count.

The longest field goal in NFL history was 66 yards, scored by former Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker. McPherson put all his strength into the kick, and with a little help from the wind at his back, he would finally get the Bengals on the board.

Instead, McPherson was forced to try the putt again, but his putt did not have the same muscle as it was several yards shorter. Packers cornerback Keysian Nixon had a chance to return the punt, but he didn't get far as the half wound down.

Although Tucker holds the record for most hits in 2021, Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Cam Little made a 70-yard field goal, but that was in a preseason game. So, this is an unofficial record, despite the incredible feat.

At the time, the Bengals certainly could have used those points as they were once again struggling on offense despite having a new quarterback under center.

Cincinnati made a surprise trade with its division rival Cleveland Browns to acquire veteran Joe Flacco as Jake Browning struggled following Joe Burrow's early-season injury.

Head coach Zac Taylor hopes his offense will become more efficient under Flacco, although there were no signs of that performance in the first half.
