Mortal Kombat III Confirmed to Be in the Works at New York Comic Con

It's official: Mortal Kombat III is coming.

At a New York Comic Con panel for the upcoming Mortal Kombat II, screenwriter Jeremy Slater confirmed that he is already in the process of writing the script for the third film.

“Our friends at New Line and Warner Bros. really happy with this movie,” said Slater, who wrote “Mortal Kombat II.” “They're so excited, they're so convinced there's a huge fan base waiting for them, that they've already hired me to start writing the next part.”

But first, Mortal Kombat II. The sequel to the 2021 film will be released on May 16, 2026, after push back from his reference date autumn 2025. Director Simon McQuoid spoke about the date change at the New York Convention Center, calling the film a “sacrifice [its] own success”, the feeling he had expressed himself over the summer after seeing the reaction to test screenings of the film.

“Every time people saw the movie, it picked up steam,” McQuoid said. “We created a massive summer blockbuster. We should be proud of the fact that Mortal Kombat, both the film and the franchise, is launching next summer. Yes, we will have to wait, but it will be huge. That's the reason.”

Karl UrbanAdeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle and Martin Ford, who play Johnny Cage, Kitana, Jade and Shao Kahn respectively, joined Slater and McQuoid on the panel. They join a returning cast that includes almost everyone from the first film: Lewis Tan, Hiroyuki Sanada, Jessica McNamee, Joe Taslim and many more. In addition to announcing MKIII, the group also revealed a behind-the-scenes featurette (which you can watch below) and a first look at a fight scene between Baraka and Johnny Cage, who appears with Lu Kang, Sonya, and Jax in tow to convince Baraka that they should team up against the villain Shao Khan. This is essentially the moment Johnny Cage donned his battle suit and his iconic sunglasses.
