GOP leaders in Congress on Friday denigrated the upcoming anti-Trump protest in Washington, D.C., in the most hysterical and demonizing terms.
After House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise called the peaceful No Kings protest planned for October 18 a “hate-America rally,” House Majority Leader Tom Emmer went further, calling it a “terrorist” event.
At the press conference, Emmer accused Democrats of causing the government shutdown to “score political points with the terrorist wing of their party, which is planning to hold… a 'Hate America' rally in D.C. next week.”
Previously, Johnson also baselessly linked the closure to this event. Calling potential protesters “Hamas supporters” and “antifa,” he said Fox News said Democrats “will not reopen the government until this rally is over because they can't stand up to their rabid base.”
Events “No Kings” have occurred in cities and towns across the country since the election of President Donald Trump. On June 14, as Trump led a massive military parade through the streets of Washington, D.C., millions of people of all political persuasions peacefully protested his anti-democratic second-term agenda.
The upcoming event will be held throughout the country. According to Ezra Levin, who co-leads Indivisible, one of the organizing groups, said it would be “the largest peaceful protest in modern American history.” And as emphasized on page organization“The core principle of all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action.”
This did not stop the Republican panic.
Emmer's remarks reflect ongoing authoritarian politics efforts by the Trump administration, led by Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, to crack down on the Democratic Party and the political left based on outlandish accusations of ties to “terrorism.”
