4 dead in shooting after homecoming football game in Mississippi, official says

LELAND, Miss. LELAND, Miss. (AP) — Four people were killed in a shooting in a small Mississippi Delta town after a high school football game, a state senator said Saturday.

The shooting happened in the center of the small town of Leland, Miss., where people had gathered after the game, said Mississippi State Sen. Derrick Simmons, who represents people in the region.

The four other victims, who were among about 20 people injured in the shooting, were taken to a hospital in Greenville and then flown to a larger hospital in the state capital of Jackson, where they were in critical condition, Simmons told The Associated Press.

Simmons said he is confident the information is correct because he has received updated information from officials with the Washington County Sheriff's Office, which is conducting the investigation, as well as other law enforcement agencies.

“People were just gathering and having a good time in downtown Leland,” Simmons said of the town of fewer than 4,000 people.

He was told that after the shooting, the scene was “very chaotic” as police, sheriff's deputies and ambulances “responded from all over.”

“This is just senseless gun violence,” he said. “What we're seeing now is simply a proliferation of weapons in circulation.”

No arrests have been reported, and Simmons said late Saturday morning that he had not heard any information about possible suspects.

“They are working on the ground, and I believe they will get to the bottom of this,” he said.

“As the state senator from this region, we ask that any individuals who may have any information regarding last night's horrific shooting to come forward and provide any information they have,” he added.
