Ontario man ditches drive-thru after discovering $75M Lotto Max jackpot win

An eastern Ontario man is now $75 million richer after winning the second-largest competition. Lotto Max jackpot in Canadian history, OLG reports.

David Hatt of Kingston, Ontario, a father of two, won the Aug. 19 drawing and received the only winning ticket for the jackpot.

OLG said Hutt found out he was the winner the next day while checking the OLG app while waiting in line for his morning coffee.

“The night before the drawing, as I was driving past the gas station where I usually buy lottery tickets, something told me to buy a ticket, so I bought a Lotto Max Quick Pick and didn’t think about it again,” Hutt told OLG.

He said he initially thought he won $75,000.

“I thought it was amazing! It wasn't until I looked closely that I noticed there were a lot more zeros!”

Hutt then drove home to break the news to his wife.

“I immediately went home and said, 'I need you to sit down.' I showed her the app screen and she asked incredulously, “Is that $75 million?” I said loudly: “Yes!”

As for what Hutt will do with the money, OLG said Hutt has several ideas, including buying a dream home for his family.

“We've always had a dream to have that special property or that special house, and it was just a dream. My wife and I always talk about it, but it wasn't affordable before. Now that dream is going to be a reality,” Hutt told OLG.

Travel plans are also on the cards. Hatt said traveling will keep him and his family busy.

“My wife and I want to see a lot of places in Europe, but not just the main cities. We really want to explore smaller towns, the countryside and rural areas. This experience will be really special for us,” Hutt said.

He also wants to treat himself to a new set of golf clubs.

Additionally, Hutt said he and his wife also want to “make an impact on a generation.”

“Of course we want to support our family, but we also want to give back to our community and help the most vulnerable in our region,” he said. “It’s not about helping one charity, it’s about reaching as many people as possible over as long a period of time as possible.”

The winning Lotto Max ticket was purchased at the Pioneer/Snack Express store on Bath Road in Kingston, OLG said.
