U-turn
Since the release of DSM 7.3 on October 8, the input data has been used. Here's the full section from DSM 7.3 company announcement:
As part of its mission, Synology is committed to providing reliable and high-performance storage systems. This commitment has led to the standardization of a rigorous testing and verification process for both hardware and software components and has been an integral part of Synology's development approach for many years. Both Synology drives and third-party verified components undergo the same testing processes to ensure they are capable of delivering the highest level of reliability using DSM.
Synology is currently working closely with third-party drive manufacturers to speed up the testing and verification of additional drives, and will announce new updates as soon as possible. However, MY25 DiskStation Plus, Value and J models running DSM 7.3 will support installation and storage pooling from untested third-party drives. This provides users with greater flexibility while Synology continues to expand its line of officially verified drives that meet long-term reliability standards.
As a result, approved drive requirements will be removed from 2025 Plus, Value, and J Series NAS devices. (Well, mostly removed – the press release states that creating a pool and cache on M.2 drives “still requires drives in HCL.” [hardware compatibility list]”)
We asked Synology whether these requirements would be removed from previous generation Synology products, and the answer to that question appears to be “no.”
“This change only applies to '25 series models: DS725+, DS225+, DS425+, DS925+, DS1525+, DS1825+. Models in the xs+ line, such as the DS3622xs+, are considered a business model and will remain within the current HCL policy for our business lines,” Synology explained.
