8Bitdo has just released a new gray version of their awesome N64 controller, and it's exactly the colorway I've been waiting for. Essentially, this is the same mat that was designed with Analog 3D in memory, but features the same iconic red, blue, green and yellow colors as the OG controller.
News Gray version for $45.00. belonging Controller 8Bitdo N64 Couldn't come at a better time as I've recently been trying to make my own. By this I mean that I replaced the black version's buttons with some spare ones from the OG gamepad, and while they hit the right authentic notes, the buttons are actually a little different. Unfortunately, it's scheduled to land in January 2026, so you'll have to wait a while to get your hands on it.
Ideally you want to catch black or white. Controller 8Bitdo N64 once Retro Black Friday Deals Start properly. However, it's only a few bucks to save, so if you just picked up the new Analogue 3D, need a new tablet for your OG Nintendo 64, or just want to dive into some Switch Online gems, you can get it now.
If you're impatient like me, you might get the crazy idea of trying to replace the 8Bitdo parts with original buttons. I have plenty of spare ones, so I decided it wouldn't hurt to try. Unfortunately, while the controller looked the part despite missing the gray casing, the buttons are actually a bit taller, meaning they're impossible to use. The same goes for the d-pad, but the yellow camera buttons actually fit fine.
Simply put, I'd just wait for the proper gray version to arrive if you really want something more authentic. I was looking forward to pairing the new Analogue N64 console with something a little flashier that would be closer in aesthetics to my N64 with the wireless controller adapter (which I use about 20 dollars on Aliexpress)
Let's just say you really want a wireless N64 controller with the same color scheme as the original, you can go for Retro Fighters Brawler 64. for $49.95. It's a little more expensive, but it comes with a 2.4GHz adapter, saving you the hassle of purchasing one separately. I've used this tablet a few times since my friend has one and it's a solid modern option for the Nintendo 64 or even Analogue 3D as it has amazing OG ports.
Ultimately, I feel like unless you want to get your hands on the cheap existing 8Bitdo marketplaces during Black Friday, we'll all just have to wait until January to get the gray version. Yes, I'm not happy about it either, but these beautiful colorful buttons are worth it.
Note: Will Analogue eventually release a matching gray 3D version? Perhaps I wouldn’t mind options with transparent cases in the “Play it Loud” style.
