87% of Professional Drivers are Ready to Embrace In-Cab AI Coaching – The Canadian Business Journal

MADRID, Oct. 22, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — New pan-European research* from Geotab, a global leader in connected vehicle and asset solutions, shows that professional drivers have a clear vision for the future of in-vehicle technology, with 87% saying they would be more comfortable using instant audio coaching based on video analysis in the cockpit with the help of artificial intelligence, rather than on inward-facing video for later viewing.

A study of more than 3,500 professional drivers in seven European countries reveals the fundamental privacy-versus-protection dilemma underlying drivers' attitudes. While more than 9 in 10 (92%) are concerned about the use of in-cab cameras, a similar 92% would be willing to ignore those concerns if video footage could prove their innocence after a collision. This conflict highlights how drivers are not against technology, but are instead weighing the powerful benefit of potential liability relief against a wide range of concerns.

The study also identified an “education gap” that fleet managers need to address. Driver problems are widespread and varied, and no one problem makes up the majority. Concerns about video being used out of context (38%), being used against them for disciplinary action (34%) and data security (34%) are significant. This illustrates the various barriers to using video cameras and suggests the need for further training and information regarding their use.

“The data shows that drivers are pragmatic and forward-thinking. However, the study suggests there is a tension between privacy and protection,” but it also points to a solution.said Edward Kulperger, Senior Vice President, EMEA, Geotab. The idea that drivers are against technology is outdated. Drivers' acceptance of new technologies increases when they understand their benefits. The industry has an opportunity to improve training on how these systems improve driver safety and security. This approach can help build a culture of trust and lead to safer roads for everyone.”

With ongoing driver shortages and growing operational pressures, using technology to support drivers facing increasing challenges on the road is a key focus for fleet managers. Assistive tools such as AI-enabled coaching and potential evidence-based driver exoneration are key to professional development and well-being.

Survey confirms earlier findings According to Geotab's Driver Survey, nearly 70% of drivers support implementing technology to improve their productivity. This new data shows that a total of 67% have a positive view of using video for coaching as long as it is constructive and collaborative, with less than 1% of respondents saying they see no benefit in having a DVR. When asked about the biggest benefits, drivers cited improving their own standards through training, improved safety and proving they were not involved in a collision, further highlighting their dual interest in both professional development and personal protection.
