2026 is off to a great start as best streaming services is filled with new horror films to help you beat the January blues.
If one of your New Year's resolutions is to watch more horror movies, I'm here to help. There are many new original films, including Texas chainsaw documentary about the massacre and new Netflix mystery, as well as some classics worth revisiting.
Marshmallow
Where: Shudder (USA)
When: January 1
Marshmallow is a new entry in the original Shudder library and is a must-see for those who love spooky campfire stories.
After a traumatic experience involving his grandfather, a boy named Morgan is sent to summer camp. He is tormented by nightmares and visions related to the fear of water and drowning, and soon he hears a story about a doctor who takes children at night and performs terrible operations on them in the basement of his house.
But is this doctor only history or is he real? You'll have to watch and find out.
Adversity
Where: Peacock (USA); Prime Video (UK, Australia)
When: January 1
Adversity is my favorite Stephen King novel, and its film adaptation is no less terrible. Kathy Bates gives a stunning performance as Annie Wilkes, the woman who saves writer Paul Sheldon from a car accident. She turns out to be a nurse And Paul's number one fan, so what could possibly go wrong?
A lot, as it happens. When she finds out that he just killed her favorite book character, she is not happy at all. And things are going terribly wrong. It's basically a single location film, focusing entirely on Annie's house where Paul is being held captive, and you'll be on the edge of your seat.
Bodies Bodies Bodies
Where: HBO Max (USA); Prime Video (UK); 7Plus (Australia)
When: January 1
2022 Bodies Bodies Bodies now available on HBO Maxand it's worth checking out. This A24 horror-comedy was a critical success, delivering plenty of laughs and scares.
The film follows a group of wealthy young men who plan a whirlwind party at a remote family mansion where they play a party game called Bodies Bodies Bodies. Naturally, everything goes horribly wrong. You'll have fun trying to figure out why someone really died, but the results may surprise you.
It joins a slew of other great A24 horror films streaming on Max, so be sure to check out the streamer's extensive library of films.
Scream
Where: Paramount+ (worldwide)
When: January 1
I'm watching Scream once a year and I might reschedule my annual rewatch now that it's airing Paramount+. It’s no wonder that Wes Craven’s horror comedy has become a cult classic and has inspired horror fans to embrace a new genre. WITH Scream 7 this year, the slasher franchise is also still going strong.
The story takes place in the fictional town of Woodsboro, where high school students fall victim to a masked serial killer. One of them in particular, Sydney, is especially scared as it happens on the anniversary of her mother's murder.
All Scream the franchise is on Paramount+ if you want to watch them too.
Bone Lake
Where: Netflix (USA); rent or buy (UK, Australia)
When: January 15
I love a secluded holiday, and you? Unfortunately, this seems to be the premise of many horror films, which is far from idyllic.
new netflix movie Bone Lake follows Diego and Sage as they take a romantic vacation to a secluded lakeside estate. Things quickly unravel when they are forced to share the mansion with a mysterious and attractive couple, and it all turns into “a nightmare labyrinth of sex, lies and manipulation,” according to the plot.
For now, it looks like Netflix will only be coming to the US, but hopefully it will be coming to other territories soon.
Chain reactions
Where: Trembling (USA, Australia)
When: January 16
Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the most famous horror films of all time, and this documentary explores its influence.
Artists Patton Oswalt, Takashi Miike, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Stephen King, and Karyn Kusama were interviewed for the film in which they discuss what Tobe Hooper's film means to them.
This is a fun addition to Shudder this month and I'm looking forward to it.
house of fun
Where: Prime Video (USA); rent or buy (USA, Australia)
When: January 31
Another Tobe Hooper movie is coming out at the end of January, and if you haven't seen it yet… house of funnow is the right time. This just joined Prime Video'horror lineup.
This slasher movie is just as good Texas Chainsaw Massacreand follows four teenagers who are trapped by a ghost train at a traveling carnival and are soon pursued by a killer.
This is a solid 80's slasher film, trust me, it will make you afraid of carnivals.
