’28 Years Later 3′ Going Forward; Cillian Murphy in Talks to Return

Third”28 years later“Work on the film is moving forward at Sony. Sony Pictures has decided to continue working on the film after the positive reaction from fans to early screenings of the second part of the trilogy,”28 years later: Bone Temple“- said sources familiar with the development. Screenwriter of the series Alex Garland writes the script for the film and Cillian Murphy is in talks to reprise the role of lead character Jim from 28 Days Later and Temple of Bones.

The zombie horror franchise began in 2001 with the release of Fox Searchlight's 28 Days Later, directed by Danny Boyle. The influential and action-packed film grossed over $72 million at the worldwide box office against a reported budget of $8 million. Fox Atomic, a short-lived subsidiary of Fox, released the first sequel, 28 Weeks Later, in 2007. The sequel featured an entirely new cast and neither Boyle nor Garland were involved.

Earlier this summer, 28 Years Later returned to form with Garland and Boyle returning to write and direct the film. The duo conceived 28 Years as a trilogy. Sony filmed the first two films, 28 Years Later and 28 Years Later: Temple of Bones, back-to-back before greenlighting the third.

28 Years Later performed well at the box office, opening to $30 million on June 20 for a worldwide total of $151 million. “Temple of Bones,” directed by Nia DaCosta, will hit theaters on January 16, but early screenings have apparently given Sony confidence that the trilogy will be completed.

Alfie Williams, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Jack O'Connell and Ralph Fiennes starred in the first film, 28 Years Later. All but Comer will return to Temple of Bones alongside franchise newcomers Erin Kellyman, Chi Lewis-Parry and Murphy, reprising her role from 28 Days Later for the first time since the first film.

Although Murphy is in talks to return for a third installment, no official announcements have been made regarding the cast. In previous statements, Boyle had expressed interest in directing a third installment, but there was no confirmation.
