It's been a busy year for the game, which is over 10 years old. If you haven't subscribed, last week we asked: “Is there really a new expansion for The Witcher 3 coming out this year?“, responding to comments by Boris Nepelak, a reliable source of information on the Polish gaming industry. Following his remarks, then-Noble Securities analyst added fuel to the fire This week.
Now it looks like more information has emerged about this DLC that was released a decade late. Per IGN PolandDevelopers CD Projekt seem to have mentioned their past interest in exploring the Zerrikania region. This isn't particularly new information, but the fact that it's now surfacing is something CD Projekt Red is preparing, as multiple sources indicate. anything What does this have to do with the game – it’s worth interrogating.
I actually spent some time reading The Witcher books last year and remember Zerrikania being referred to as a vast (human!) Realm located to the east of both the Northern Kingdoms and the Nilfgaardian Empire. There are two huge forests in the region – one in a deep canyon and one resting in the foothills of the Fire Mountains. A good setting for a big open world DLC then…
To date, the region has actually been mentioned in games. Unless you (or Geralt) invite Leto to Kaer Morhen at the end of the Ghosts of the Past quest in the base game The Witcher 3Summer notes that she will run away to Zerrikania. You can also get Zerrikania's outfit in the free Ciri Alternate Skin DLC. Perhaps this was a hint of the future?
Given the lore of the books – and I think the one season of the Netflix adaptation – you can expect dragons to appear in the region. The culture there worships them as god-like beings, but they are known to sometimes go berserk… perhaps leading to the need for a Witcher – or Witcher. With – deal with.
As for CD Projekt Red, the company has not released a single new game since then. Cyberpunk 2077 extension Phantom Freedom at the end of 2023 (although Cyberpunk 2077 came to Switch 2 coinciding with the console's release in 2025, resulting in very impressive sales). The game continues to sell well – who would have thought after this launch – surpassing 35 million sales and occupying a near-constant place on the Steam bestseller list.
CD Projekt Red previously told Eurogamer that it “does not comment on rumors or speculation” regarding rumors of The Witcher 3 DLC: this is the company's standard position on these things. So it remains to be seen whether this is all legit or just some fancy thinking. Watch this space.
