My first instinct when a show throws in an unexpected pregnancy or a surprise secret child is to roll my eyes. It feels like a cheap attempt to inject drama into the plot — and if the shock value of the pregnancy is the only thing holding the story together, it usually falls flat once the baby comes. But every once in a while, that “I'm pregnant” scene ends up being a genuinely great addition to the story…and even gives us a cute new cast member to root for.
But first, a little disclaimer: I'm not saying these characters shouldn't have kids, or that their babies' lives aren't valid. This is TV land, people. It's full-on fiction, with characters and plots designed to make money. So none of this has to do with the kids, the characters' fictional lives, or me hoping real-life pregnancies cause drama. This is just me sharing my hot take on the plot choices the writers made.
Now that that's out of the way. Let's start with the unexpected kid storylines that totally ruined their shows. You know…the ones that had you thinking, “You're out of ideas, aren't you? Because this plot makes zero sense.” Yeah, those. So, without further ado, let's talk about the unexpected kids that completely derailed their shows.
Maybe others will disagree, because April is smart, quirky, and adorable. But I don't think her storyline added anything meaningful to the show. We'd already seen Luke step into a father-figure role when he became Jess's temporary guardian, so revisiting that arc just to prove (again) that he could handle being part of Lorelai's life felt unnecessary. Introducing April felt like a contrived way to create drama in Luke and Lorelai's relationship — even causing them to delay their wedding. It just felt like a device to complicate, not enhance. So as much as I love April, this is one plot line that could've been left out entirely.

Ross and Rachel's daughter, Emma, from Friends
Okay, this one might get me in trouble — because, yes, who doesn't love Emma? But hear me out. Rachel's pregnancy and the whole “who's the father?” storyline felt like pure ratings bait to get people to tune in for season 8. And once we found out Ross was the dad, the storyline could've been such a great way to show real growth — bringing them closer together, maturing their relationship, and letting us watch Rachel evolve into motherhood. Instead, Emma mostly added more petty drama and endless Ross-and-Rachel fights, making me wonder if Ross and Rachel's (potential eventual) baby couldn't be brought into TV world at a later date.
The show really did Haley dirty. Much like Lane Kim from Gilmore Girls, the writers took a young, ambitious woman and handed her a mediocre guy, surprise kids, and a motherhood storyline. And sure, plenty of young moms want to be young moms (which is great), but with Haley (and Lane), it felt less like character growth and more like the writers shrugging and saying, “Well, what else are we gonna do with her?” As a viewer, I wanted so much more for these women. And knowing Haley would be forever tied to Dylan because of this arc, it just felt like such a disappointing ending.
When I got to season five of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and we were all just supposed to act like it was totally normal that Buffy suddenly had a surprise sister, I lost it. I remember throwing the remote and saying, “What are we doing here?” Some magical monks altered reality, creating false memories so everyone believed Dawn was Buffy’s biological sister — which, sure, works for a few episodes. But then…she just never left. And honestly, even though Dawn grew on me, this is one plotline I think could’ve been changed — or maybe cut entirely. But hey, I’m open to letting you change my mind in the comments.
5.
Ann and Chris's baby, Oliver, from Parks and Recreation
In my opinion, this was one of the most forced romantic relationships and one of the most random storylines in the entire show. While it wasn't technically unexpected (since Ann was already considering sperm donation before deciding to conceive naturally with Chris), the whole plot still felt a bit out of nowhere. I totally get Ann wanting to take her future into her own hands and start a family, but turning that decision into a rushed rekindling with Chris, followed by their very quick exit from the show, just felt unnecessary and disjointed. Honestly, I wish they'd left the whole thing out.
This one still makes me mad to this day…especially when the writers revealed that Jakob wasn't even the father. Why do us dirty twice? The whole thing just added chaos, and honestly, it made me feel sad for Jean. At first, it seemed like the storyline could bring her and Jakob back together, give Jean a new sense of purpose as Otis headed off to college, and maybe even build a new family dynamic. But instead, the audience ended up pitying Jean, Otis, Jakob, the baby daddy, and baby Joy — soooo everyone involved. It was just…too much.
7.
Sandy and Kirsten's baby, Sophie, from The O.C.
I know, I know, The O.C. is basically a soap opera. You practically NEED an unexpected pregnancy, a long-lost sibling, an unhinged ex, and a car accident every other season. But this? This was too much. It was Kirsten's second unexpected pregnancy (sadly, her first didn’t make it to term). So to have ANOTHER? It just felt like grasping at straws. Then again, if you’ve seen the last season of The O.C., you know “grasping at straws” might as well have been the writers' motto because so many of their decisions were questionable. Honestly, it felt like they just threw in this plot to make the finale seem memorable. I call it lazy.
8.
Amy and her ex-husband Adam's daughter, Emma, from Superstore
I still can't wrap my head around this one. Sure, America Ferrera was pregnant in real life, so the writers decided to weave that into the show…but it felt totally misguided. Her character announced she was pregnant with her ex-husband Adam's baby just as her budding romance with Jonah was taking off. Yes, it added drama, but more as a complication than anything that actually propelled the story. Instead of enhancing the plot, it just weighed it down.
9.
Rory's baby from A Year in the Life
This one's tough for me, because I can see how this could've been a perfect ending for Gilmore Girls. The idea that this could be the last line could've been genius, as it circles back to Lorelai getting pregnant with Rory at a young age. But here's the problem: A Year in the Life didn’t build up the four-part series to make this ending feel earned. It felt like a last-minute move just to get people talking. If the plot had shown Rory's growth, the unexpected pregnancy could've been framed completely differently. But the entire series was a mess. Rory's career, her travel dreams, her personal life, her romantic choices — all of it regressed. So the ending just highlighted everything that went wrong.
10.
Spencer Hastings's surprise twin sister, Alex, from Pretty Little Liars
This show just kept getting weirder and weirder…and yes, I watched every single episode. But the surprise twin-sister twist was some of the laziest writing I’ve ever seen. It felt like Spencer had a long-lost twin because…well…why not?? The wild thing was that season six actually ended up being pretty good. They could've ended it right then and there. But then they just kept going by throwing in a surprise twin, an (admittedly awesome) lifesized dollhouse, and an entirely new “A” plot. I don't know, it just made me wanna rage eyeroll.
Now that the chaos has been unleashed, let’s talk about the unexpected kids who actually made the plot so much better. You know, the pregnancies that made you genuinely happy for a couple, the kids who turned out to be hilarious additions to the cast, or the surprise plotlines that gave you something totally new and unexpected to root for. So let's talk about the unexpected kids that were genuinely worth it…
11.
Jim and Pam's daughter, Cece, from The Office
We all knew Jim and Pam would eventually try for a kid, but the fact that they were still planning their wedding totally caught us off guard when the writers introduced their surprise pregnancy. After being friends for so long and knowing each other inside and out, this unexpected pregnancy felt right. Plus, admit it, Cece Halpert is the cutest little baby. Watching Jim and Pam naturally move into marriage, parenthood, and the next steps of their lives suited the show perfectly. And I bet no one could've guessed an episode about a workplace volleyball game would end with Pam at the hospital, checking out a sprained ankle, and being told that she's pregnant.
12.
Charles's adopted son, Nikolaj, from Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Although Charles Boyle had a messy past — divorce, a Rosa obsession, and whirlwind, obsessive relationships — he finally stuck the landing with Genevieve (after proving she didn't belong in jail for a crime she was being framed for). Watching him in a romantic relationship built on mutual respect and admiration was incredibly refreshing. And then came Nikolaj, their adopted son. And honestly, the storyline couldn’t have been more perfect. Everything about Boyle as a dad just fits. Plus, the long-running joke about how to pronounce his son's name never gets old.
13.
Phoebe's (brother's) triplets from Friends
I know some people didn’t love this plotline, but I genuinely did. But maybe I'm biased because every scene with Phoebe’s brother Frank Jr. and Alice was my fave — but whatever! The decision to be her brother's surrogate perfectly suited Phoebe's personality, making this reveal completely reasonable, somehow. And it even added real depth to the usually clueless and sometimes shallow Phoebe. Even though the triplets didn’t really impact the main six much going forward, this (kinda) unexpected pregnancy is one I’m a huge fan of.
14.
Lily and Marshall's baby, Marvin, from How I Met Your Mother
This pregnancy reveal was one of my all-time favourites in a sitcom. Quick refresher: Lily got soup from one of their favourite restaurants and left some for Marshall to eat a few hours later. After they both ate it, Lily got violently sick. Marshall, thinking it was food poisoning, braced himself for the same fate, all while trying to get through a major job interview. He survived, got home, rejoicing that he made it through his interview before the food poisoning struck, to find Lily holding a positive pregnancy test and telling him it was never food poisoning. Such a satisfying reveal! And to see them become parents was perfect! Plus, little Marvin was named after Marshall’s late father. So yeah…big fan of this one.
15.
Lucille's adopted son, Annyoung, from Arrested Development
This was one of the most random, weird, chaotic, and unhinged plotlines to ever just pop up in a show — and honestly, it was awesome! I genuinely thought Lucille would adopt a kid as a joke for a few episodes, and then he’d disappear the second she got bored (because, you know, Lucille is the worst). But Annyoung ended up becoming a real part of the family, and the dynamic between him and Buster was absolutely priceless.
16.
Jay and Gloria's son, Joe, from Modern Family
This storyline was such a whirlwind for me. When Gloria announced the pregnancy, I thought, “What are we even doing here?” I was ready to fight anyone who was fully on board with the news. But honestly, the actor who played Joe completely won me over. He was one of the cutest, funniest, cheekiest kids to ever grace our screens. Now, thinking about the later seasons, it would feel so wrong without Joe. I don't know whether to thank the writers or the casting director, because Joe wouldn't be Joe if it were anyone else. You can't write that charisma.
17.
And finally: Susan and Mike's son, MJ, from Desperate Housewives
This was another one that had the same “Modern Family's Joe” effect on me. At first, I was kinda happy Susan and Mike were having a kid together, even though it felt like just a dramatic plot point. Then again, Desperate Housewives thrived on random twists and turns, so it made sense. But even so, I always thought Julie was a great daughter, and Susan could’ve been content with Julie alone. But once MJ came along, he completely won me over. MJ turned out to be one of my favourite characters, gave me some of my favourite storylines, and made me say “awww” every single time he was on screen. LOVE!
Which ones am I missing? Any unexpected TV kids come to mind that made you roll your eyes or want to sit down with the writers to have them explain themselves? Or any kids who unexpectedly came along and made you change your mind and actually love them? Drop your thoughts in the comments!
